What’s Your Body Trying to Tell You?

What’s Your Body Trying to Tell You?

Many of my clients ask for guidance about their health, and while I’m sometimes led to recommend specific treatments like “Go get a biopsy,” most often, the recommendations that are provided are soul level prescriptions.

In her book, You Can Heal Your Body, author and teacher Louise Hay tells us that your body often serves as a messenger for your emotions. For example, lower back problems can be connected to a fear of a lack of financial support. Problems with circulation represent the inability to feel and express the emotions in positive ways. High blood pressure? A longstanding emotional problem that hasn’t been resolved. Knee problems represent emotional or mental inflexibility, fear, or an unwillingness to give in.

Louise Hay recommends asking yourself:

“Could this be true? What could be the thoughts in me that created this condition?”

Next, repeat: “I am willing to release the pattern in my consciousness that has created this condition.” Then it’s time to create a new thought pattern. The suggested pattern is provided in the book. Repeat it several times, and assume that you are already in the process of healing.

Does this suggest that you’re at fault for being sick? Not remotely. In fact, what I’ve seen over and over in my sessions is that when people don’t know where else to put difficult emotions, their bodies will carry the burden for them. SO not fair!

Past Life Psoriasis?

Sometimes we carry emotional burdens across lifetimes, and eventually, our bodies surrender under all that weight. Soul mapping enables me to understand the emotional, mental or soul level origins of their physical challenges without knowing anything about the client’s current life challenges. I can practically hear their eyes opening wide over the phone line when my guides pinpoint the issue!

As I’ve often mentioned in this blog, one of the most challenging things about physical life is that we usually learn most quickly through adversity. When we’re not getting the message through repetitive life challenges—bad relationships, accidents, financial hardship, and others—our bodies sometimes sound the alarm.

In my case, the red flag came in the form of a grand mal seizure. “HELLO…!” my body was screaming,”time to take a look at this!” At the time of my first seizure, I was in a job that was killing me and in my free time, I was covertly practicing my psychic abilities for fear of rejection and humiliation. In  Louise Hay’s book, the emotional cause of seizures is “running away from the self or from life.” My brain was carrying that burden for me.

The new thought pattern suggested for seizures:

I am at home in the Universe.

I am safe and secure and understood.

Following my first seizure, I knew I had to look at how I was treating my body. I was filling it with quick-fix foods that weren’t giving me any sustenance. Not only was I not feeling safe in my life, I was unconsciously making my body an unsafe place for my spirit. I was physically, emotionally and spiritually malnourished! Given my understanding that our bodies are merely vehicles for our souls, I knew it was time to clean up my act. (You can read that story here.)

Three months later, I transitioned to a raw food diet. Eight months later, Viva Institute was born. Two years later, we bought a farm in Brazil. You know the rest of the story…

You might be wondering, “What if I don’t know why I’m sick? What if I can’t figure out which emotions are responsible for feeling this way?” or even “What if I DO know, but I don’t know how to stop thinking/feeling this way?”  That’s when it’s time to call in the special forces.

Ask for help.

If we’re regularly asking for spiritual guidance with life’s challenges, our bodies won’t need to carry those burdens for us. It just doesn’t have to get to that point. Regular meditation and prayer serve as mental housekeeping, and increasing the number of plant-based foods we eat is simply a reminder that the physical body still follows some basic rules. Before going to bed, ask that whatever burdens you’re carrying will be released while you rest. For th0se eight small hours, just let it go.

Food, water, fresh air, exercise, meditation, and prayer. Take four of these and call me in the morning.

If you’re interested in learning more about life’s hidden messages, join us for the next session of Viva’s online course, “Difficult People and Other Angels.” The next session begins September 12, 2011. Register here.

  1. Thank you for this. I should dig out that book because I’ve got pain in my fingers, my elbow, my hip, my back, my shoulder and that general pain I get in my backside from my husband…

  2. amen and halleluiah! I believe it was my mother who taught me to look to my emotions when my body was bothering me, and how funny the body can literally manifest symptoms of things like being pissed off (bladder infection linked to being angry with someone) or hemorrhoids being linked to a situation that is a pain in your ass.

I’ve found that foot pain happens to my right foot whenever I have a fear of taking the next step in my life.

Have you read “The Wild Genie”? http://www.wildgenie.com/ Difficult periods for us are often about emotional release and physically processing whatever stresses we’ve internalized in the past month or more. Every month my body will highlight for me the things I have to pay attention to, whether it’s feeling overwhelmed with the business (need to outsource more things) stress about money, resentment from overworking and missing the summer (need to go swimming STAT) etc.

    • What an amazing mom you’ve got! I think Western medicine, with all of its advances, did us the biggest disservice by disconnecting people from their relationship with their own bodies. We’ve lost our ability to “sense” what;s wrong with us, so we’ve placed all of our trust in doctors and pharmaceuticals to fix what ails us…and that’s just one part of the solution. Talk to your body first, keep asking questions, and wait for the answers. It sounds like it’s second nature for you!
