How Do You Measure a Year?

How Do You Measure a Year?
How Do You Measure a Year?

Soon after we began telling friends and family, a friend posted one of my favorite songs from the musical Rent on Facebook. It’s a song that always makes me cry, so I grabbed a box of Kleenex and pressed PLAY.

I sniffled along until I got to the last line:

Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes,
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Moments so dear.
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Six hundred minutes
How do you measure, measure a year?

In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights
In cups of coffee…

When I heard this line, just at the moment when I should have been crying, I started giggling. I couldn’t stop. It was absurd, really, but these days, our lives are measured in juices, in supplements, in flax oil and liters of coffee.

But there are also bright sunshiny walks in bamboo forests. Morning dips in crisp mountain freshwater pools filled with sparkling crystalline pebbles. Long talks on the hammock and the many quiet, prayerful moments in between.

We find humor where we can. And yes, most certainly we measure our days with love.

This above all else.
